NTM data on electricity includes the following countries:

European:

  • Austria
  • Belgium
  • Bulgaria
  • Croatia
  • Cyprus
  • Czech Republic
  • Denmark
  • Germany
  • Estonia
  • Finland
  • France
  • Hungary
  • Ireland
  • Italy
  • Latvia
  • Luxembourg
  • Netherlands
  • Norway
  • Malta
  • Poland
  • Portugal
  • Romania
  • Slovakia
  • Slovenia
  • Spain
  • Sweden
  • Sweden Railway Electricity Supply
  • EU-28 (Region)

Non-European:

  • United Kingdom
  • China
  • India
  • Japan
  • Russia
  • USA
  • Mexico
  • Canada
  • Australia
  • Central and South America (Region)
  • Asia excl. China (Region)
  • Africa (Region)

The electricity production mix for each country is based on statistics from the International Energy Agency (IEA) from 2019, when information from 2019 was lacking, data from 2018 was used (for Central and South America, Asia excl. China and Africa). The statistics has been slightly modified based on the assumptions below. The life cycle emission factors for electricity production, distribution losses and the own electricity consumption for the energy sector is based on data from Sphera (2021).  However, in some cases the database didn’t have distribution losses and own electricity consumption for the specific country or region. In these cases, the information was obtained from IEA 2018 where it was present. In some cases, the total production was lacking in the statistics and therefore it was summed manually in excel.

Additionally, when the database didn’t have the exact country specific emission factors, another similar country was used as approximation. For the larger regions a specific country was chosen for the analysis, since there is only a certain amount of countries available in Gabi:

  • Central and South America was approximated as Brazil
  • Asia excl. China was approximated as Indonesia
  • Africa was approximated as South Africa

Assumptions and modifications of IEA data

Coal

In the IEA statistic lignite and hard coal is included together as coal. However, the emissions of CO2 from lignite compared to hard coal are about 40% higher per kWh. Therefore, the IEA statistics have been complemented with statistics from sphere (2021) to divide coal into hard coal and lignite.

Biofuels

In the IEA statistics electricity from biofuels is presented as one category. Biofuels does however consist of different types for example electricity from biogas and biomass. The environmental impact differs between the different types. According to Sphera (2021) electricity produced from biogas is small share and therefore the assumption biofuels has been considered to include biomass only. Our sensitivity analysis shows that this assumption has negligible impacts on the results.
